Why pattern sizes do not match store sizes
A lot of people are surprised when their pattern size is different from the size they buy in stores. That is normal.
Sewing patterns are built on standard body measurement charts. ASTM International publishes tables of body measurements, such as standard D5585 for women's misses sizes, to help manufacturers develop patterns and garments that match how people are shaped today.
Real bodies rarely match a chart exactly. One person may fit one size at the shoulders and another at the hips. That is where custom sewing shines.
Fabric choice matters as much as fit. North Texas summers are long and hot, so breathable fabrics such as cotton and linen are popular for warm weather pieces. Heavier fabrics work well for fall and winter. When you share your pattern, Nayna can talk through fabric options that suit the design and the season you plan to wear it. The pattern envelope usually lists suggested fabrics, which is a good place to start the conversation.
Nayna takes your measurements and compares them to the pattern before she cuts any fabric. Then she adjusts the pattern so the finished piece fits you, not an average. That extra step at the start saves time and fabric later.

I'm a wife, a mother of two and a grandmother of four. I've always loved crafting and sewing, and I've spent years doing alterations both professionally and from home.
I'm retired now, but I still sew right here from my home in Denison. When I'm not at the machine I'm with my family, loving on animals of every kind, or daydreaming about the beach.
