How much room is in a seam

Taking something in is usually simple. There is fabric to spare, and Nayna sews a new seam where it fits you.

Letting something out is different. It depends on how much fabric the maker left inside the seam, called the seam allowance. Some pieces have a generous allowance. Many modern pieces have very little.

Seams are engineered for the job they do. ASTM International's standard D6193 describes stitch and seam types and notes that a good seam balances strength, elasticity, durability, security and appearance with the fabric and how the item is used. A seam in stretchy knit and a seam in heavy denim are built differently.

Stretch fabric adds another wrinkle. Knits and fabrics with spandex move with your body, so they are usually taken in a little less than woven fabric. Otherwise the piece can feel tight when you sit or bend. Nayna pins these while you are wearing them and checks the fit as you move before she sews the new seam.

So before letting anything out, Nayna checks the seam allowance and the fabric. If there is enough room, she can give you a little more space. If there is not, she will tell you up front.

Meet Nayna

Hi, I'm Nayna. Pull up a chair.

"Whether your clothes are too big or a little too small, I will let you know what I can do. I also adjust shoulders that are too big."

I'm a wife, a mother of two and a grandmother of four. I've always loved crafting and sewing, and I've spent years doing alterations both professionally and from home.

I'm retired now, but I still sew right here from my home in Denison. When I'm not at the machine I'm with my family, loving on animals of every kind, or daydreaming about the beach.
