Fitting a uniform for a Texas summer

Baseball season in Grayson County runs through spring and into the heat of summer. Games and practices often happen in the afternoon sun.

Fit matters for more than looks. The CDC's guidance on heat and athletes recommends lightweight, light colored and loose fitting clothing in hot weather, because loose clothes let the skin cool off. A uniform that is taken in too tight can hold heat against a player's body.

So when Nayna alters a youth uniform, she aims for a fit that looks neat without being tight. The player should be able to swing, throw and run without the uniform pulling.

Growth is the other challenge. Young players grow fast, and a uniform that fits in March can be short by July. When it makes sense, Nayna can leave a little extra length in a hem so it can be let down later. Ask about that when you drop off the uniform, especially for younger players who may wear it for more than one season.

Bring your player for a fitting if you can. Have them move around in it so Nayna can see how it sits. Ask them to take a practice swing and crouch like a catcher, because that is where a tight fit shows up first.

Meet Nayna

Hi, I'm Nayna. Pull up a chair.

"I have done many alterations on uniforms, including youth baseball. As a grandmother of four, I know how quickly kids grow."

I'm a wife, a mother of two and a grandmother of four. I've always loved crafting and sewing, and I've spent years doing alterations both professionally and from home.

I'm retired now, but I still sew right here from my home in Denison. When I'm not at the machine I'm with my family, loving on animals of every kind, or daydreaming about the beach.
